Lecture 1 of 54, CD # 383, Date
of Lecture: May 13, 2001
Abstract:
This Bible study series begins in the Book of Samuel as God chooses Saul
as Israel’s first king. Saul is shown to be a type of leader that
foreshadows the church during the Pentecostal age from its beginning in
Acts 2 until present day. God sets Saul up to fail. He was from the
tribe of Benjamin, not from Judah. Rulers were to come from the tribe of
Judah.

Lecture 2 of 54, CD # 384, Date
of Lecture: May 13, 2001
Abstract:
In 1 Samuel, the prophet informs Saul he is to be king and anoints him
at a private dinner party. The tribes of Israel parade and Saul is
chosen by lot. Saul is coronated. The mark of Saul as a herdsman and not
a shepherd is reinforced. Saul persuades Israel to follow him into
battle against the Ammonites. National blindness and church blindness
(in part) is foretold symbolically by unfolding events. Saul gets off to
a good start as king.

Date of Lecture: June 10, 2001
Abstract:
Everyone has a “Saul” in his or her life and, by the same token, can
also be a Saul to certain others. Each of us manifests some of the
traits of Saul. This lesson explores the first two of the three events
that led to Saul’s downfall.
Without his father’s knowledge, Saul’s son, Jonathan, leads a
sneak attack on the Philistines.

Lecture #4 of 54, CD #386,
Date of Lecture: June 10, 2001
Abstract:
Jonathan eats honey in violation of the king’s (his father’s) order of
the day. Saul puts his son,Jonathan, on trial. This typifies
Saul-type leadership which often causes problems for aspiring overcomers.
On a corporte level, this Saul trait is manifested in the church during
the Penecostal age. But none is righteous; Saul lives in us all.
Honey is a symbol of the Word (the Bible) and Jesus.

Lecture #5 of 54, CD #387, Date of lecture: July 15, 2001
Abstract: Saul is tested as
the agent to fulfill God’s prophecy to Moses regarding the destruction
of the Amalekites and fails the exam. Saul disobeys God’s instructions
due to his pride. He adds insult to injury by blaming “the people” for
his failure. Saul’s character is marked by a multitude of flaws as is
the church, of which he is symbolic.

Lecture #6 of 54, CD #388, Date of Lecture: July 15, 2001
Abstract: Pride, deception,
hypocrisy, willfulness and other negative traits are evident as Saul
commits the third and final of his major mistakes early in his reign.
Samuel pronounces God’s judgment on Saul for his disobedience in
not utterly destroying the Amalekites. Samuel must step in to finish the
job. Execution of God’s sentence is postponed for the duration of Saul’s
life. We are subtly exhorted in the scriptures to overcome our own Saul
traits.

Lecture #7 of 54, CD #389, Date of lecture: August 12,
2001
Abstract: God sends Samuel
to Bethlehem to find the future king of Israel. Samuel annoints David,
who simultaneously becomes annointed by the Spirit of Yahweh,
foreshadowing the baptism of Jesus. Meanwhile, back at Saul’s palace,
the Holy Spirit has been taken from Saul and God sends an evil
spirt to Saul. Saul’s advisers send for David to come to the
royal court and play music to calm Saul’s violent behavior. In the
course of the story, we are given more symbolic examples of Saul as a
type of the modern church and of as David as a type of Christ.

Lecture #8 of 54, CD #390, Date of Lecture: August 12,
2001
Abstract: This Scriptural
account of David’s victory over Goliath from 1 Samuel 17 is particularly
rich in symbolism, types
and shadows. David stepped forward to defend Yahweh’s honor and secure
the freedom of Israel with unconventional weapons, even as we are
instructed in the New Testament to arm ourselves with spiritual weapons.
The battle is Yahweh’s and he will deliver our enemies into our hands in
His own time. James relates his own life experiences as he progressed
into understanding this truth and how that understanding granted him
peace.

Lecture #9 of 54, CD #391, Date of lecture: September 9,
2001
Abstract: From 1 Samuel 18,
we learn about the deep friendship and resulting covenant relationship
between David and Saul’s son Jonathan. David gets a full-time gig
playing music in Saul’s palace plus a high position in the army. David’s
military successes begin to fuel Saul’s jealousy and envy. Saul,
afflicted by God with an evil spirit prophesies falsely as a type of
false prophet. He makes the first of his attempts to kill David.

Lecture #10 of 54, CD #392, Date: September 9, 2001
Abstract: In 1 Samuel 18,
Saul is afraid of David because Yahweh is with David and has departed
from Saul. Likewise, the Saul church becomes jealous of those who aspire
to be overcomers. Saul persecutes David in several ways, but David does
not become bitter. Instead, he demonstrates the qualities of an
overcomer as we should when confronted by our own Sauls.
